Cicely performed the world premiere of Bruce Craig Roterís "Double Concerto for Clarinet, Cello and Orchestra" with Dr. David Beebe conducting the Saint Rose Symphony Orchestra on November 30, 2009. The composer performed as the clarinet soloist in the acoustically superb Picotte Recital Hall in the Massry Center for the Arts on the College of Saint Rose campus. This is an early work of Dr. Roter who completed it in 1980 while studying with Craig Shuller at the Juilliard School. Stylistically the concerto represents the eclecticism that remains consistent in all of Roterís compositions. There is an aggressive dissonance and non-triadic sonorities that are balanced with a lyrical and traditionally conceived sensibility. Cicely presented Roterís Sonatine for Unaccompanied Cello earlier in the year demonstrating a natural understanding and affinity for the composition, and so this work of youthful exuberance seemed to be a perfect fit for Dr. Roter and Cicely to present the Double Concerto as the soloists. And indeed it was!
