It’s on to Carnegie Hall for young musicians Madalyn and Cicely Parnas of
Stephentown. Having won First Prize at the recent International Chamber Music
Ensemble Competition held in Boston, the girls will perform next Monday, May
26, in a Winners Recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The girls received
top honors in Boston in the String Ensemble Division, performing the Duo for
Violin and Cello, Op. 7 by Zoltan Kodaly, with Madalyn, 17, on violin and
Cicely, 15, on the cello. Their mother, Lea Parnas, said the family was very
happy with the first prize win in Boston because the String Division is the
most competitive of all in the ICME Competition.
At Carnegie Hall they will be the first ones to play and they will again
perform the Kodaly Duo piece. The Kodaly Duo, along with works from four other
composers including Ravel and Handel, can be heard on their CD, “Parnas Double:
Duos for Violin and Cello” that was released in January. The CD is available at
TownHallRecords.com as well as at Amazon.com.
The Parnas sisters, granddaughters of the great cellist, Leslie Parnas who
performed with Pablo Casals and Yehudi Menuhin, have won many prizes in
competition both together and on their own and have been featured in numerous
national and regional magazines, as well as on national and local radio
broadcasts. In recent weeks they have performed at the Troy Savings Bank Music
Hall’s Music at Noon series and with the Lake George Chamber Orchestra in Glens
Falls. Cicely last year was a winner of the National American String Teachers
Association Competition. Madalyn is currently attending the College of St. Rose
and has received a full tuition Music Talent Award.
